Fri, Jul 16, 2010 - Unknown distance
Unknown distance. Holy smokes was that hard! Only had time for an hour instead of the full 90 minutes. Sweated a ton and couldn't do several moves all the way...but can tell this will be really helpful for flexibility and range of motion.

Sun, Jun 20, 2010 - 35.16 mi [Cycling] Details
35.16 mi in 02:10:15 hours at 16.20 mi/h on Specialized Tarmac Expert. [Cycling] Okay...how does this work?

Decided to do the St. Charles loop again today but at an easy pace since we worked pretty hard and fast in yesterday's windy ride. There was only a light breeze tonight, so that was really nice. However, we rode the loop in reverse. I was a bit nervous at first because of the several mile climb up Campton Hills road...single digit mph mostly for that.

But...

The rest of the ride was much easier riding in that direction overall. I would say that we gave about 75% of the effort of yesterday's ride and it took us the same exact amount of time. That was nuts...and welcome for a recovery ride.

I think the lack of wind contributed significantly to the ease of the ride too. Also, looking at the CardioTrainer graph we literally never stopped for 35 miles. Not. One. Stop. That's crazy! What a huge difference riding out there compared to riding in our stop-go-stop-go area. It makes the drive out there so worth it.

Great Father's Day ride with my babe!

Sat, Jun 19, 2010 - 35.80 mi [Cycling] Details
35.80 mi in 02:07:06 hours at 16.90 mi/h on Specialized Tarmac Expert. [Cycling] Great ride through St. Charles. Headwinds or heavy cross winds for most of the ride (3 directions...ugh)...except for Beith Road: a beautiful tailwind for the last 8-10 miles or so. What a great way to end that very hilly loop.

Just Jodi and I which was really nice. I ended up puling for a majority of the headwind sections, but we did a little switching on and off.

Riding in St. Charles is SO different than riding in the Aurora/Batavia/Warrenville/Wheaton areas. Let's put it this way: we stopped all of 3 times in 35 miles. Three. In our area, we stop 3 times in 2 miles just for traffic/stoplights/etc.). So, it gives the ride a much more intense feel because we're pushing a whole lot longer with less (almost none) rest stops.

I also observed/experienced that if there's a cross wind from the right all the sweat on my face blows over to drip off the left side of my face or into my left eye. That's really annoying. But...if that's my biggest problem (and it's not, unfortunately), then I'm doin' okay.

Thu, Jun 17, 2010 - 29.61 mi [Cycling] Details
29.61 mi in 01:48:17 hours at 16.41 mi/h on Specialized Tarmac Expert. [Cycling] It's been a week to the day since I last rode my bike. The day was very warm and humid...but once we started riding, the breeze made it very, very comfortable. The group worked pretty well today. John kept the beginner group with us, so there were some pretty slow spots, but I think that group is getting better, because they kept up pretty well.

My legs felt pretty crampy early to the middle part of the ride. I'm thinking it's because my sleeping pattern has been pretty bad over the last week. Lots of stuff going on at work and home. Not enough riding...

Surprisingly, even with my legs feeling like that, the sprint through Fermi went really well. Burned some matches and it took a while to recover. There were lots of stronger riders this time...unlike last week...so that really helped spread out the workload throughout the ride.

...and then there was Leask road...

The key to that final sprint road is to wait until the very end before burning whatever matches you have left. People jumped as soon as we got on the road...which is way too early. Part of the lure is that you start that road on a downhill...so why not blow and go then? Because. The speed you build won't carry you through the 1.5 miles to the end of that road.

So...shock and awe in the final sprint. Woot!

Thu, Jun 10, 2010 - 31.13 mi [Cycling] Details
31.13 mi in 01:49:34 hours at 17.05 mi/h on Specialized Tarmac Expert. [Cycling] First group ride in a couple of weeks. It was a good ride overall, but I was experiencing some pretty bad dehydration. Work schedules were quirky today in that I wasn't able to break away to get a drink in the afternoon...and I forgot my water bottle in the car when I drove to the hospital. Boy...did I feel that at the end of the ride (crampy calves and some lethargy, mainly).

Still, even with that, I was glad to ride again. Interesting dynamic as both groups rode (beginner and advanced) together for the beginning, but then Raouf "released" the advanced group to do a couple of sprint laps around Fermi Lab before regrouping for the trek home. Even though, I went through most all of both water bottles...I think it was too little, too late. The sprint laps went okay, but I was hitting the wall towards the end of the second lap.

The ride back to the shop was brutal because there was a massive headwind from the east. Unfortunately, there weren't that many stronger riders to cycle through the pulls...so...that was pretty rough.

Oh...the fitness I gained as a result...:-)

Note to self: Don't forget your water bottle in the car next time when you're at the hospital. Ever. Again.
