40.98 mi in 02:26:43 hours at 16.76 mi/h on Specialized Tarmac Expert. [Cycling] Great ride today. Started out in cloud cover but the sun burned it off. Pretty leisurely for the majority of the ride because we were celebrating Harvey's 80th birthday by having him lead the ride. But...there were a few sprints. The longest one, in particular was a hoot. It was a sprint that was probably about a mile long, but I opened up the matchbook...and burned all the matches I had. It really was a lot of fun to fire all the cylinders all out. No strategy...just blow and go. Woo hoo!!!
Still, the group stayed mostly together and people worked well together to pull the group along faster. The ride ended with weather that was sunny and in the 70's.
Also had my JB-200's paired to my D Inc for music for the ride. The battery drain was minimal and pleasantly surprising.
Finished up at Red Robin for a birthday luncheon for Harvey with the group. Jodi joined us for lunch, so that was nice. Especially because while we were gone, Kylie mowed the lawn and Gabs & Caleb cleaned the downstairs of our home. Nice!!! |

12.68 mi in 00:53:00 hours at 14.35 mi/h on Giant Rincon. [Cycling] Sunny and 75 with little wind. It's good to ride without any cold weather gear for a change.
Really enjoyed a slight tailwind for a welcome change at the end of the ride. |

12.65 mi in 00:56:00 hours at 13.55 mi/h on Giant Rincon. [Cycling] Another beautifully cool morning. High 40's when I started, probably mid-50's when I arrived. Ahhhhh...riding the tank this morning after riding my road bike last night. The contrast is staggering.
Good start to the day. |

30.31 mi in 01:44:59 hours at 17.32 mi/h on Specialized Tarmac Expert. [Cycling] Cooler weather was refreshing. The group worked well together despite some fairly stiff headwinds on the way home. My computer showed an average of 17.2, which is pretty fast for this group. It's still a communal ride rather than a hammerfest, despite some of the tendencies of some of the regular riders.
I wasn't sure what to expect on the ride as it was my first ride in a week. Too much stuff going on last week and this past weekend to fit any riding in until yesterday :-(. Sleep has been a mixed bag, too.
I think I experienced what felt like the beginning of quad cramps at the beginning of the ride which is never a good sign. However, as the ride progressed, the cramps never materialized and I seemed to have a lot matches to burn. After the ride when i arrived home and chatted about it with Jodi, she made the observation that it seems like I do a lot better if I have a few days of non-riding or low key riding leading up to a group ride. The old axiom that "sprinters need rest" seems to still apply, I guess.
Felt like I could have dropped the group in most of the sprints and finished the ride feeling really good. Now if I could only sleep through the night...
At one point, I was riding next to Harvey, the 80 year old guy that still rides with the group. I hope I'm still riding like that when I'm that age. I asked him how the was doing and he looked over, gave me a thumbs up and said, "Old man river keeps on rolling." Harvey rocks.

26.35 mi in 01:30:00 hours at 17.57 mi/h on Specialized Tarmac Expert. [Cycling] First group ride in a couple of weeks. Smaller group (18'ish) on a day that felt like & looked like it was going to rain...but didn't. Only saw a few puddles on the road for the entire ride. Felt good to be in a pack again...drafting rocks.
Legs felt somewhat empty as my sleep has been poor over the last couple of weeks. Still had enough to hammer when it counted though. ;-)
Ended up coming late to the ride, so I just parked about 10 minutes from the shop, changed/geared up & then rode back to meet the group as they rode to where I was. Worked great.
Was a pretty quick/short ride as the grey day made for not a lot of daylight. Not dark, but kind of dusky for the entire ride. Wished I had remembered to bring my light just to be sure I could be sure to be seen from the front. Had the flashing lamp behind, so that was fine.
Harvey was on the ride today as this was his first ride since being back from annual Florida migration. It's pretty inspiring to see an 80 year old guy riding with the group and riding pretty well. I hope I'm riding that well when I'm 80 years old. |
