61.24 mi in 05:00:30 hours at 12.23 mi/h on Revolution Scandium Deore. [Cycling] It started as a routine training mission. But nothing is that simple. Met up with Banners, Bill and Lummy at Plawsworth and headed out to Wolsingham. At King of the Hills, we joined onto the tail of the Beast riders which had started in Durham earlier that morning. Picking some points up overtaking the tailenders, we passed the St Johns Ambulance administering bandages, tea and biscuits to a lady who'd had quite a nasty crash in the strong crosswinds. Breaking from the beast route, we descended into Lanchester, then back out over to Satley, into the headwind, gusting at 30mph and down into Wolsingham. The valley funnelled the south westerly into a headwind as we headed into Stanhope. By the time we reached Stanhope, Lummy had buggered off so we rolled on as a trio. Crawleyside presented no problems and we picked a point up with an old cyclist. Had a tuna toastie (£3.50), teacake (£2) and cup of tea (£1.60) before heading off on the Castleside road. Bill's bike started to eat it's chain at the top and then it became a rescue mission.
We've never lost an cyclist in Weardale, we're sure as hell not gonna lose one on my watch! Failure was not an option. With the freehub buggered the only option was to continually pedal, so a bike swap was on. Banners took the sick bike, GSD took trixy and Bill took Scanny as the group were practically blown back over the moors into Consett where they split off (swapping bikes again) to train stations and homes.
I believe this was our finest hour....

Back on track from Stanhope, tootled up Crawleyside in 30 minutes, picked off everyone except Bill who was about a minute ahead of me. Last people I passed were Dave and his missus from Cyclone Wing Chun! Blasted down the Waskerley Way to Consett before heading to Tynemouth down the Derwent Valley. GPS crashed after bunny hopping up and down kerbs with the suspension locked out. Had a picnic stop at work before the final ride into Tynemouth and a hotdog at the van in the carpark. Rode back to the office with Bill to pick the car up and tagged an extra 10 miles. |

When the group were eventually located in Appleby, 20 miles in the wrong direction, a decision was made to relocate to Middleton on Teesdale for lunch, then head over the hills to Stanhope. With an exceptionally gusty westerly wind, this ride was particularly tricky over the exposed moors. The descent into Stanhope down a 17% hairpin was interesting. |

53.42 mi in 05:08:47 hours at 10.38 mi/h on Revolution Scandium Deore. [Cycling] Day 1 of a 3 day Coast to Coast with Tait Walker. Claire dropped out at the start due to illness. 12 miles in, Julia had to hop into the van at mile 12. It was nice to see this part of the route in daylight. Bill was roaring up the hills. Watched a buzzard soar overhead, then take a dump which landed less than a foot away from me. Missed the opporunity to ride through buzzard poop. Picked up a puncture up Whinlatter which knocked me to the back of the group. Got into Keswick for a light lunch at the Lakeland Peddlar before Andrew dropped out to stay wtih Julia. So in the end it was just Bill, Erica and me who rolled into Penrith just over 2 hours later. Bill picked up his second puncture of the day in the last 100 yards, as well as a damaged front dérailleur. |

144.57 mi in 14:38:40 hours at 9.87 mi/h on Revolution Scandium Deore. [Cycling] One Day Coast to Coast - Rode out of Whitehaven at 0400 Saturday Morning, through the dark with Banners and Martin P. Made it into Penrith at 0900. Quite a few 3 day C2Cers were heading out of the town. Had a munch on a sarnie then headed out to pass them. Spent the next 6 hours swapping positions with them as we headed into the big peaks on the ride.
Hit Hartside with 70 miles on my legs so was quite slow up. Recovered a bit with a sandwich topped off with a cup of tea and free sausage rollfrom the butty wagon outside the cafe.
Marshmallows were about the only thing powering me up some of the middle hills. Dropped all the 3 dayers by Stanhope and we were on our own from there. At 7pm, stopped at Martins house to recharge both the GPS batteries and our tanks with some corned beef pie, before heading down to Sunderland for the last stretch into the fading light and spitting rain.
Made it to Roker at 9pm exactly to find there's a new sculpture to mark the end of the C2C. Had a quick photo then headed back on the W2W route through Sunderland city centre and out to Silksworth and Doxford Park then along the A690 to Houghton. Heavy rain soaked us through on the last 10 miles so any additional miles to bump up to 150 were scrapped.
Spotted: Barn Owl, Tawny Owl, Buzzard, countless bats and frogs, Red Squirrel, slugs, snails but no puppy dog tails.
GPS crashed once and forgot to start it once too, lost 0.4 miles so full total from Martin's GPS.
C2C - 136 miles, 13h28 pedalling, 17h elapsed
C2C and return - 144.5 miles, 14h38 pedalling, 18h10 elapsed
