Wed, Apr 11, 2012 - 37.82 mi [Cycling] Details
37.82 mi in 02:14:39 hours at 16.85 mi/h on ICE Vortex FS. [Cycling] Vortex#33-Barwon Heads via Lake Rd. The weather looked grim but still no rain by 2.30pm so thought I'd head out for a ride. Bit of a SW'erly.... Some really idiot car drivers, lost of AirZounding today, people just do not look, they reverse without looking over their shoulders ?? Once clear of Torquay things got better and a quick squirt up Horseshoebend and then Boundary to pick up Lake Rd, then onwards to Barwon Heads.....the return into the headwind was challenging, gear still shitting me as they hop and skip like a barsteward, bent sprockets, grrr..... Got home to find warranty parts from ICE, new rear mudgaurd, new rear cassette & tool and some tubing..... I am swapping rear cassettes tonight :-)

31.49 mi in 01:58:00 hours at 16.01 mi/h on ICE Vortex FS. [Cycling] Vortex#70-B Heads with Rossi & Zollie-clear day, sunny & cold-warm at the end

New boots fitted to the Vortex - Schwalbe Tryker tyres - the old Duranos did 5000km and were cut and and slashed and worn thru to the canvas.... A clear night so it was a bit chilly this morning.....leggings and windproof jacket essential. Met Rossi & Zollie at 8.10am at the usual rendez vous point. Quick intro's and we rode, it was chilly.... Nice gentle ride upto B Heads and Annies for coffee and Banana cake. The Trykers are a harsher, but seem to roll better than the Duranos, also sharper changes of direction.....good job the Vortex has suspension otherwise the ride could be bad !! Seem faster for similar efforts but could be misleading as there was not much wind today (finally after 2 weeks of solid 30 kph wind !!). Rode back to Juc into the wind and again the Trykers felt fast, seem to roll very well and bit of tyre hum/roar when powering on.....maybe those stiffer sidewalls help ? Lower pressure compared to the Duranos (85 vs 100 psi) More coffee at Swell, day warming up nicely, time to go fly my copter !!

41.95 mi in 02:50:00 hours at 14.81 mi/h on ICE Vortex FS. [Cycling] Vortex#69-Wind, Rain, punctures, split tyres-Moriac loop

A hard one..... It rained at the start, lots of water on the road, glass washes into cycle lane/shoulder..... Can't see glass due to water, not a good recipe...... Heard the crunch of glass in Torquay, no hiss of puncture or leaky tubes...... 10 km further on the road, blam..... Flat front left tyre...... The rain had stopped, so pulled over and tipped the Vortex on it's side and saw the canvas of the tyre so figured that glass was not the cause...... I was supposed to be meeting a bunch of riders another 10km up the road so texted VeloRossi to say I had punctured......at the same time JP texted to say he was nearby so told where I was and he headed my way..... Had the tube out in no time and found a puncture in another spot......checked the tyre and sure enough a sliver of glass..... The tyres are a mess, 5000km of Australian rough as roads..... Tears and nicks everywhere..... Checked the tyre thoroughly and pulled out more sharp grit and then put some card on the bit which was thru to the canvas, fitted spare tube......JP arrived..... Had a look at the right tyre and there was a horizontal cut about 12mm long and tube poking through, so took that tyre off and patched the tyre and added some card.... The group came to me but I told them to head on their way.... JP, Rossi and I went to Moriac into a 20kph headwind, felt really sluggish and was slow and HR at 130bpm. At Moriac had 2 coffee's and some banana cake and everything felt good, the legs felt better and the HR was up :-) Good ride back home, some scary understeer at 65kph at Bells on the rough road and lot pressure in the tyres..... Time for new tyres ! Get the Trykers ready !

88.51 mi in 05:03:00 hours at 17.53 mi/h on Sinner Mango Sport Red Edition. [Cycling] Mango#24-Epic trip to Trisled with VeloRossi-Dromana

Another early start (for me), left the house at 7.10am, met Rossi at the usual rendez-vous point & we headed to Q-cliff to catch the ferry, made good time with no stops, saw 75kph on the Garmin on Shell Rd, but gusty sidewinds made it a bit scary, lots of badly resurfaced roads with deep gravel in the shoulder (cycle lane) so stuff to the road in a lot of places & had some crazy drivers overtaking on corners with double solid white lines causing oncoming cars to swerve, why can't they just wait 30 seconds ? Got to Q-cliff at 8.45am & got the 9am ferry. Scooted along to Dromana (short 25km hop) which took about 40 minutes & then spent 2.5 hours talking with the Trisled guys. Lots of interesting stuff & Ben has some many ideas ! Lots of bikes, trikes, hpvs, WR bikes, had a look at the new Avatar but it was not possible to ride anything :-( The carbon RV looked just like a normal one & a lot stiffer than I was expecting. Thanks to Ben for spending the time to talk to us ! Might go and have a play on a velodrome in Darebin in the near future, sounds scary but fun ! Got lunch at Two Buoys, poached eggs on sour dough toast with chorizo & smoked salmon !! With a nice Mornington Pale Ale. Quite a quick dash back to Sorrento to catch the 4pm Ferry, on the way back it was mental in Rosebud, we hit rush hour with lazy drivers literally moving from one parking space 300m to another one, it was mental, cars chopping in & out of car parks but the Mango stands out a mile and lots of defensive riding & taking the lane to keep clear of opening doors onto the cycle lane ! We got to the ferry with plenty of time & had a chat with the people at the check in & in the car queues & had more tea on the ferry ! The final ride was a bit of a slog with a long drag of a hill on some awfully gravelly shoulder, like riding through treacle ! Good run on Grubb Rd, cruising in the 40 - 50kph, hit over 70 kph in a 50 kph zone leaving Ocean Grove, oops...

37.31 mi in 02:06:00 hours at 17.77 mi/h on Sinner Mango Sport Red Edition. [Cycling] Mango#23-ANZAC Day Dawn Service-brekkie & B Heads loop

It's ANZAC day so JP suggested we all meet up at Point Danger War Memorial for the dawn service and then grab some brekkie and then ride..... Adam and I left Juc at 5.35am, (it was not too cold) quick squirt into Torquay and rode straight to Point Danger......very busy and a moving remembrance service, the bugler is the best bit !! Met the crew when we were leaving at 6.45am (JP, VeloRossi, M&M & Slim), and it had got a fair bit colder - lots of condensation on the Mango and race hood, so we hightailed it to the Sands for a buffet breakfast for $18......really good !! After brekkie M&M & Slim had to get back to Geetown but the rest of us went on our normal loop to B Heads and Lake Rd..... NW'ly wind at 20 kph so pretty steady headwind on the B Heads to Geetown part of the ride...... I was cruising faster than Adam and Rossi due tot he wind so kept stopping after a few kays......JP headed off to Ocean Grove...... Good run back down Horseshoebend Rd.... Then a nice walk with the dogs in Ironbark Reserve !!

60.49 mi in 04:05:00 hours at 14.81 mi/h on ICE Vortex FS. [Cycling] Vortex#68-B Heads loop twice with Adam&Joe Podcast - 30kph W'ly

Moody looking day, windy and overcast with scattered sunshine and showers......30kph W'ly wind which it felt like too !! Just cracking in a few kays so only stopped for water, had the iPod charged up and had 4 hours catching up on Adam&Joe podcasts.....laughed out loud quite a bit, oops ! On lap1 saw an Orange RotoVelo when I was leaving B Heads, he came my way but he didn't catch me going into a headwind ? On lap2 passed a Catrike on 13th Beach Road....he was going rather slowly so passed him going quite fast with a tailwind ! Face feels like it's coped a load of wind burn..... It was cold enough to need thermal undershirt and leggings, brrrr...... Also saw a coupe of Eafles out at Lake Connewarre....
