135.77 mi in 13:55:00 hours at 9.76 mi/h on CARRERA VULCAN , REBUILT WITH DEORE LX THROUGHOUT. [Cycling] Wow what a ride.
enjoyed this ride the most out of any ride.
Riding with Davo , Martin and Garry . Set off from Whitehaven spot of 10.00p.m , semi dark but windy(luckily tail wind) . Big thank you to Garry's dad who took us over in his 4x4 with trailer . Could see quite well till about 11.00 then it got properly dark and the lights were much needed . They worked well , especially Davo and Martin's proper lights . We tended to ride in pairs , Davo with me and Garry and Martin together as each had a good set of lights between them . As the night went on it got colder and colder and by first light it was actually getting unbearably cold. We stopped at a phone box at the end of Loweswater to check the map as we were uncertain of the bridge situation at Low Lorton . As it happens the route has been re-sign posted. I could actually remember the route really well from the first time I did the ride. Riding up Whinlatter pass in the pitch dark at about 1.00a.m was awesome , you couldn't tell how steep it was , just find a gear and pedal . Note- the head torch was very usefull for seeing which gear you are in, Then when you thought it couldn't get any darker we turned into the forest stages of Whinlatter - awesome ! it was like ok Hill people , here we are come and get us. That was actually quite scary and I will probably never watch Cabin Fever , Wrong Turn or House of Wax ever again.
Going through Keswick at about 1.30 was weird then onto the remote railway path along the river was mint.
Day light started to break quickly once past Mungrisdale with a perfect outline of Saddleback and Skiddaw in the distance . Davo and Garry both were suffering from sickness caused possibly from the cold and a combination of concentrating on the dark road lit only by the bike lights.
As daylight dawned it was obviously going to be a bright day and it was although still very cold. Hartside was in the clouds , wet and misty . After a cuppa we set off on the rollercoaster of a descent into the proper hills of the C2C , Hartside , Garigill, Nenthead , Allenhead, Crawleyside. it was warming up by them and it was hard to believe we were back in familliar territory just after lunchtime. After a cheese and ham toastie we set off for the last 40 miles . Unbelieveably my rim cracked on my rear wheel and was in danger of coming of completely and putting a stop to my riding only 8 miles from the finish, but believe it or not we were 2 mins from Dazza'a house who had a bike (same bike but about 10 years younger ) that we could borrow a wheel from. Even more unbelieveable was the fact he was walking his dog when we got to his estate and we bumped into him.
Finally finished at 7.00p.m , sun out everyone feeling really well , great ride everyone rode amazingly , enjoyed it immensely , dark riding , through the night , good route etc. |

Sun, May 23, 2010 - 63.13 mi [Cycling] |
63.13 mi in 03:55:00 hours at 16.12 mi/h on SPECIALISED TRICROSS SPORT. [Cycling] Ar man , Trixie is sooooooooooooo good, with only riding her now and again I always get this new amazing feeling when I do ride her. She just glides along. Set off just after 6.30 a.m , beautiful morning, it was actually starting to get very warm straight away . Quite a few early morning bikers out and about . A few grumpy All roadie types that never look , nod or say anything unless you've got an expensive road bike and are wearing all the one piece tight lycra suits , snobs !
Anyway , set off along riverside past the Metro Centre.
up past Winlaton, Rowlands Gill , turn towards river at Ebchester , up the long Whittonstall climb , but had a few extra PSI in tyres , ride a bit more firm but by heck she rolled effortlessly. Up in pedals most of climb, flew up , then left towards Kiln pit hill on to Minister acres, stayed on long straight road to Slaley this time. dropped into Blanchland , by god it's fast down there.
Climbed up onto top of Rookhope common a few steep climbs up there and stopped for breakfast after all the climbs were down . Sat on the moors in the glorious sun for 10 mins , it was still only 8.30a.m , not a sole in sight .
Set off again along road divert of Rookhope top c2c , it's amazing that road, it is definately up hill yet the slight but steady tail wind that rushes up the hillside along there. It's top chainey nearly top gear all the way up there , amazing. I think the wind rushes up the hillside and warms and has a thermal effect lifting and pushing you along, sounds mad I know , but everytime I go along there with a dead tail wind it really does push you along. The drop into Edmundbyers was amazing , 4 miles of head down 40+mph stuff , pretty much without pedaling.
Climbed up Carterheads way dropped into Shotley bridge , back through Ebchester, Rowlands gill and hoem , really pushed hard all the way back , drop bars big gears pushing the whole time , felt really fresh and ready for more. Home before 11. which pleased the ball and chain. |
