Sun, May 5, 2013 - 301.00 mi [Cycling]
301.00 mi in 21:51:00 hours at 13.78 mi/h on SPECIALISED TRICROSS SPORT. [Cycling] 24 Hour Challenge as part of a series of events for the Bright Red Charity. Done for a very good charity and lovely people who run the charity plus a good chance to officially set your PB for mileage in a day.

Using a set course Starting in Whalton , looping clockwise through Tranwell Woods - Saltwick - Kirkley hall - Ogle back to Whalton

12.45 mile loop which worked out perfectly to keep a track on progress as you knew 2 laps were 25 , 4 laps 50 , 8 laps 100mile etc , so easy to plan a strategy.

Goal was 300 miles , meaning doing an average of 12.5 miles per hour for 24 hours non stop - unfeasbile as would need to stop at some point for food , drink and a rest , so averages would have to be increased. We knew the Loop was good for good average it was all down to the wind conditions. On the day we had strong SW winds which were favourable for I would say 75% of the course.

Strategy - Carry enough food for 8 laps ( approx 8 hours) and equal to 100 miles . Carry enough drink for 4 laps ( 4 hours = 50 miles) , meaning stopping as little as possible at the supply van .

Then break the ride down into x3 8 hour segments , hopefulyl doing 100 miles per segment.

So a stop every 4 laps for drink, every 8 for food other than a quick bite on chocolate or sweets,

So at 12.00 noon on Sunday we set off in a group , straight away winds felt strong but in a favourable direction. FIrst lap was average 14.8 mph, then broke away from the group and over the next 5 laps built up the loop average to 15.5 mph , so doing some simple clacs in my head worked out by lap 8 (100miles) I would be a hour ahead of schedule.

As the night came in it got cold , really cold , plus a little harder to see and mainly the fact that the wind had dropped to pretty much 0mph , saw average drop into the 14'smph , the course was much slower with winds at 0 than with the strong SW winds .

So the first 100 mile stint was 12.00 noon to 8.00p.m
second 8.00p.m to 4 a.m ( that was mentally weird effectively starting a new stint at 4.00a.m)
Third and last 100 mile stint 4.00a.m to 12.00noon Monday

It was all going to plan although the hour in hand was quickly taken up by the odd short food stop and drink refill stop . In the last 6 laps only had 5 mins in hand , which meant having to really push for a few laps to build a higher average , more like 50 min laps to gain 5 mins in hand.

So pushed like mad on Third last lap ( which was hard as already tired and exhausted) , gaind 5 mins on that lap , second last lap thew strong SW winds had built back up and actually gained 10 mins on that lap . Really thirsty by now as didn't stop for drink for 4 laps . So going into last lap had 15 mins in hand but last lap was really hard as dehydrated , tired and strong winds , but eventually looped back round to the van at 11.45 with 15mins in hand at 299 miles , so slowly head up intot he town and looped back and forth a few times to take me into the 300's , actually did 302.8 miles to allow for any slight inacuracies in the data between the cycle comp and the GPS , didn;t want anyone saying , ar but there's a 5% error in the data ,

So 24 hours , 24 laps , 300 miles , well pleased with that

Ride time :- 21 hours 51 mins
Total time :- 24 hours
miles:- 301 miles
Average varying from 15.5 mph to final 13.9 mph

Great ride , great charity, hats off to the people who run it , who put themselves through all the pain and effort to raise money , looking forward to Everest................. :-o
