46.40 mi in 03:13:05 hours at 14.42 mi/h on Bianchi Eros. [Cycling] WST - Day 7 Harbor Springs to Mackinaw City
Final day of the tour. Today's route includes a Michigan designated scenic drive, "The Tunnel Of Trees". Still spending time trying to figure out how to get my buds and GG up here. We have really been blessed with good weather. The only rain came at night and the high temperature stayed in the mid 70's to low 80's. Now if we could just get rid of the wind. The Kzookid can tell you, I hate the wind! We are traveling at a relaxed pace for the first half of the day. I gap Kzookid on a long ascent and get to rolling along. I notice my pace has quickened and realize it is because of the road terrain. It is remindful of the Paris route back home with some nice rollers. Of course we consider that route flat around here. With 20 miles left I decide to leave it all out on the road. The cramps have not been a bother for several days. I start passing rider after rider. There are two in matching jerseys ahead of me. I realize their pace has quickened. I pull a little closer and the pace ticks up another notch. Then the lead rider gives his buddy the chicken wing and they trade positions. They've spotted me and don't want to be passed! I eventually overtake them and they drop back their pace. I soon hit the city limits and wait at the first corner for Kzookid to show up. There is a photo op at the bridge and lighthouse then off to lunch. The facilities are more crowded at the school as everyone is trying to meet the deadline to load the bikes and hop on the bus. It has been a great week and a great ride! A big shout out to my host and tour guide, the Kzookid! |

33.90 mi in 03:03:13 hours at 11.10 mi/h on Bianchi Eros. [Cycling] WST - Day 6 Charlevoix to Harbor Springs
Mariah was back as a bandit. Cool and windy today, with the wind in the 30 mph range. I was in favor of the middle route that took the ferry, but Kzookid wanted to take theshort route on the bike trail. Claims he had not done that route before, but I think he just wanted to shorten the time in the wind. There were multiple stops for photo ops along the trail. The curbs at the street and driveway crossings were crazy! Big bumps instead of smooth ramps. The trail diverted to the sidewalk in Petosky. The walks were painted pink so you knew you were on the right path. Finally rolled into Harbor Springs. Stopped at Gurney's Liquor Store to grab lunch. Kzookid knew a side street that avoided the steep hill up to the high school. Shh, don't tell the organizers we skipped the hill. |

Rained over night, but cleared in the morning. One challenging hill on Barnes Road. Not that bad at all, short and steep. The route finished with 10 miles of rollers. Maybe it was the distance traveled or the hours on the bike, but one of those rollers seemed worse than Barnes Hill. There were no momentum hills in these rollers. Glad to see the high school on this day. Looked like rain again. Personal record of five consecutive days on the bike! |

Stayed in the small ring all day in respect of the cramps the day before. Kzookid and I were at different paces today, so not a lot of riding together. We arranged a meeting place for lunch based on a description of the restaurant. Well, there were two places that fit the bill and I picked the wrong one. Finally was able to reach Kzookid on the ECD and found his location. The waitress suggested the perch sandwich, which I had already noticed on the menu. It was delicious, but later I was concerned about all the fried food I ingested. Today's routed included Philosopher Hill, a four mile stretch (lots of time to think). We were one mile into it before I even realized we were climbing. My thoughts on the hill were how blessed we were with the weather. There was even cloud cover to keep us cool on the long stretch of the hill that was in the open. This is also the day were the time not spent enjoying the countryside was split between trying to figure out how to get my buds up her and how to get GG up here. |
